I saw this article at the New York Times website today and I thought it was worth sharing.

There is also another article from the very next day that goes in depth on one boys story in Utah.  He is now the president of his school's GSA and I was actually very surprised by his mother's reaction when he came out to her.  Here is the second article.

Its so exciting to see Gay-Straight Alliances being started around the country and being talked about.  Exposure, even if some people are reacting negatively, is better than none at all in my opinion!

I think it's wonderful to see GSA groups popping up in that area . I think it makes me feel lucky to be in a more tolerant area. Sure, not everyone around here approves or is comfortable with it, but in comparison, it's my opinion that we've all got it relatively easy. I know people from southwestern states like Utah and Texas that have had an awful time struggling with their sexuality, being able to accept it themselves and to be accepted. In this day and age, it's not the most uncommon thing in the world to be an orientation other than heterosexual, but a good portion of Utah is Mormon society, who like many other strictly practiced religions are very much opposed to homosexuality. These kids are lucky they aren't being sent to conversion therapy... if they haven't already. More than just religion, there are countless excuses for prejudice towards homosexuality. It's truly something incredible to see that these kids finally have a place to turn to where they won't be judged and where they can feel accepted. It also makes me just a little more grateful that we have places like this where there is no social expectations other than respect and equality. It's about time! I can only hope this trend keeps up and we see more of our country accepting, or at the at very least respecting the right that each and every one of us should have: to love and be loved in a way we see fit.  :]
